If American comedy needs politics like balloons need air, then the presidency is like the Macy's Thanksgiving parade: lots of big, floating characters waiting to be punctured.
So what do you do if, come January, the guy sitting in the Oval Office is an earnest, charming family man, the country's first African-American commander in chief, who rode in on a message of hope - and who's smart enough to make fun of himself, as he did last week with Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show"?
D'oh!

Between eight years of George W. Bush and the never-ending 2008 campaign, political comedians have had plenty to feast on. "Saturday Night Live" has enjoyed a resurgence as a must-watch political jest fest, thanks mostly to Tina Fey's Sarah Palin riff; "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" have featured Bush coverage and campaign news the mainstream media wouldn't touch; and the Onion, Wonkette, 2-3/6 and other snarky Web sites have found endless sources of politico-based humor.
But if Obama wins, is the edge gone?
Just look at these recent fake headlines from the satirical "newspaper," the Onion:
"Obama Runs Constructive Criticism Ad Against McCain""Obama Undertakes Presidential Internship to Ease Concerns About His Lack of Experience"
"Portrayal of Obama as Elitist Hailed As Step Forward for African-Americans"
Okaaay.... pretty mild stuff.
But Carol Kolb, head writer of the Onion News Network, says don't worry, the funny is coming.

"Comedians haven't been hitting Obama that hard because he hasn't made a lot of missteps - yet," says Kolb. "If he actually becomes President, there's no way he will please everyone. The left-leaning comedians are supporting him in opposition to John McCain, but they're probably not going to agree with all of his policies. He'll be working in government and dealing with bureaucracy and pleasing voters, so he'll start making mistakes.
"I have no fear that there will be something to make fun of. It may take awhile for that to emerge, but when it does, the humor will be more nuanced and informed. We will pounce when the time is right. Now we're just biding our time."
In an interview last week on "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer," "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels emphasized the late-night show's commitment to bipartisan, even-handed political humor.
"The moment someone is elected, whoever the new President is, we're in opposition to that," Michaels said. "Not in an unpatriotic way, of course, but our job [description] is, we're not their friends.
