It's a few days after Halloween, and that can mean only one thing: Time for this year's Halloween special from The Simpsons.
Thanks to the vagaries of television and World Series scheduling, the annual fright-fest from TV's longest-running sitcom is always a few days after the fact. So how does Treehouse of Horror XIX stack up in the tradition of terror? Frightfully well.
As always, the 30-minute special is delivered as a trilogy of tales, all parodies or spoofs of some current or classic piece of pop culture that has been given some appropriately ghoulish makeover.
First up is a knockoff of the Transformers movie called "Untitled Robot Parody" that is worth watching just for the sight gag of the heads of Homer and next-door-neighbor Ned Flanders poking out of the back-ends of the giant robots that transformed from their cars.
Next, The Simpsons crew gets a little zeitgeist-y with its Halloween homage to AMC's red-hot series, Mad Men – "How to Get Ahead in Dead-vertising." Granted, the best part of this segment is the opening sequence, a beautifully Simpson-ized riff on the show's opening with Homer's silhouette standing (and falling) in for the dashing Don Draper. But any Treehouse of Horror story that features the ghost of Krusty the Klown blowing Homer's head off with a shotgun has earned a place on a countdown of the series' Halloween highlights.
The show saves the best for last with a takeoff on the Peanuts' Halloween classic, here retitled "It's the Grand Pumpkin, Milhouse." The animation beautifully captures the look and style of the original, but all that loving nostalgia doesn't get in the way of some hilarious horror involving a child-eating pumpkin.
Critics may keep declaring The Simpsons dead, but like a zombie the old show keeps showing signs of life.The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror XIX
